Basílica da Estrela

Queen Maria I’s votive basilica, the first church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart, with a dome terrace over Lisbon.

The white dome of the Estrela Basilica rises over one of Lisbon’s most elegant quarters: a late-baroque church built as the fulfilment of a queen’s vow, the first in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a favourite stop on the famous 28 tram.

A queen’s promise

In 1760, Princess Maria — later Queen Maria I — promised to build a church and convent if she were granted an heir to the throne. The vow was fulfilled from 1779, when building finally began, until 1790: the infant, baptised José, had died two years before completion, and a grief-stricken Maria I kept her promise anyway, giving Lisbon one of its most beautiful interiors — grey, pink and yellow marble worked into geometric patterns, paintings by Pompeo Batoni, and the enormous nativity scene of some five hundred cork and terracotta figures by Machado de Castro. The queen’s neoclassical tomb lies in the transept. A small fee allows visitors to climb to the dome terrace for a 360-degree view over Lisbon, one of the city’s finest; next door, the Church of São Roque y la Panteón Nacional continue a tour of Lisbon’s baroque glories.

Practical information

The basilica stands at Praça da Estrela, west of the centre; the 28 tram stops at the door and the Metro is a 10-minute walk. Entry to the church is free; the dome climb has a small charge. Visit in the late afternoon, when the light through the windows is at its best.
