We depart from the village of Rabo de Peixe and sail along steep cliffs to the picturesque Vila das Capelas, passing unique volcanic and coastal formations.

Exploring the Elephant’s Trunk and Natural Arches

The highlight of this trip is seeing the Elephant’s Trunk, an iconic natural arch carved by the sea, along with other caves and coastal arches.

Morro das Capelas, a tuff cone formed by a submarine eruption, similar to the one that created the Vila Franca do Campo Islet.

During this immersive experience, we explore:

• Lava flows with columnar jointing, revealing the impressive geology of the north coast;
• Forms of differential erosion, such as small rock fragments that give rise to islets, natural pools, arches and coastal caves;
• The imposing Buraco de São Pedro, a coastal cavity that shows the combined force of volcanism and the sea.

This geological diversity reminds us of the power of nature and the resilience of our people.

Port of Vila das Capelas – History, People and Tradition

Towards the end of the route, we approach the port of Vila das Capelas, the historic heart of the village and a witness to its maritime traditions.

The slopes and the port show the continuous interaction between human creativity and the power of the sea – a unique perspective on the life of Azorean coastal communities and their cultural legacy.

The orange export trade and whaling, which marked the Azorean economy, shaped the lives and identity of generations of local sailors.

The north coast of São Miguel is more exposed to the Atlantic and conditions can vary.
We recommend booking your boat trip early in your stay to allow flexibility to reschedule in case of cancellation due to weather.

Meeting Point – Where the Adventure Begins

We depart from the traditional Rabo de Peixe Fishermen’s Marina, in an area where traditional hook-and-line fishing is still practised.

Subject to weather conditions; Azorean Seascape | Sharing Experiences may cancel the trip if safety or the quality of the experience is at risk.

Whenever sea conditions allow, we make strategic stops for a swim – ask us about the day’s conditions.

We operate with a semi-rigid boat (RHIB).

Minimum number of participants (except in cases agreed in advance).

Please inform us in advance of relevant medical conditions (pregnancy, heart or back problems, recent surgery, etc.).
