Guided Trail – Ruínas with Picnic

The Ruínas Experience is much more than a trail: it is a deep journey through the nature, history and soul of the west coast of the island of Flores.

The route begins in the picturesque parish of Mosteiro, a place where silence and rural life blend with stories of the sea, pirates and ancient communities that shaped this singular landscape.

Right from the start, the surrounding nature shows what will accompany walkers throughout the entire journey: valleys, streams and unique vegetation. Here and there small animals appear, such as rabbits, birds and endemic plants that complete the scene of untouched nature that characterises this side of the island.

As we move forward, the trail takes us through former inhabited areas and ruins that bear witness to a vibrant past, now given over to silence and time. This contrast between what once was and what remains gives the route an almost mystical aura, which intensifies as we walk under the imposing gaze of Rocha dos Bordões, now seen from an absolutely unique angle.

The trail then descends towards the valley that leads to Fajãzinha, crossing landscapes that seem to come from another time. Passing traditional houses, old cattle sheds and streams that run between vegetable gardens and pastures, we feel the living history of one of the most beautiful areas of the island.

The outing culminates in the majestic Fajã Grande, right next to the emblematic Poço do Bacalhau, where an impressive waterfall over 90 metres high offers the perfect setting to savour the moment and bring the experience to a close.

To complete this memorable day, the Experience OC includes a local, immersive Picnic, perfect for regaining your energy and savouring the gastronomic authenticity of Flores.
