Museu do Douro

The museum of the Douro and its wines, in the heart of the oldest demarcated wine region.

The Museu do Douro in Peso da Régua

The Museu do Douro, in Peso da Régua, tells the story of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. Installed in the historic centre of the town, above the river, it gathers collections, images and voices of the generations who built the terraces of the Douro — and it is the natural gateway to the landscapes classified by UNESCO as World Heritage.

The museum

The museum occupies a historic building in the centre of Régua, the town that grew with the river trade of the wine. Its collections bring together the material world of the Douro — from the tools of the vineyards and the boats of the river to the archives of the wine houses — and its exhibitions explain how the region invented a way of taming the valley with terraces and walls of schist.

What to see

  • The permanent collections, with the objects and stories of the Douro.
  • The temporary exhibitions on wine, landscape and river life.
  • The views over the Douro and the terraced slopes from the town.
  • The riverside of Peso da Régua, the old port of the wine trade.

Visiting

The museum is in the centre of Peso da Régua, easily reached by train along the Douro line and by road from Vila Real and Lamego. Opening and programmes follow the official information of the museum, and a visit combines well with the river and the quintas of the valley.

Nearby

I Douro Valley itself, with its vines and cruises on the river, and the historic town of Lamego, complete the journey.
