Madeira embroidery is known around the world, and the Museu do Bordado e do Artesanato in Funchal tells its story. The museum, run by the regional institute for wine, embroidery and crafts, explains how the island’s embroiderers work and how a local craft became an international export.
A craft and its history
Embroidery has been part of Madeiran life for more than 150 years, worked by women in their homes across the island and sold to visitors and export markets. The museum presents the techniques, patterns and history of the craft, alongside other traditional arts and crafts of Madeira.
