Museu do Bordado e do Artesanato

A museum in Funchal devoted to Madeira embroidery and the island’s traditional crafts.

The Museum of Embroidery and Crafts in Funchal, Madeira

Madeira embroidery is known around the world, and the Museu do Bordado e do Artesanato in Funchal tells its story. The museum, run by the regional institute for wine, embroidery and crafts, explains how the island’s embroiderers work and how a local craft became an international export.

A craft and its history

Embroidery has been part of Madeiran life for more than 150 years, worked by women in their homes across the island and sold to visitors and export markets. The museum presents the techniques, patterns and history of the craft, alongside other traditional arts and crafts of Madeira.

What to see

  • Madeira embroidery, with examples of its patterns and techniques.
  • The history of the craft, from the nineteenth century to today.
  • Other traditional crafts of the island.
