Feira do Queijo da Serra da Estrela

The great fair of Serra da Estrela cheese, held each year in Celorico da Beira.

Serra da Estrela cheese

Each year, the town of Celorico da Beira celebrates the most famous cheese of Portugal. At the Feira do Queijo da Serra da Estrela, the producers of the mountains bring their cheeses to the town — the creamy queijo da Serra, protected as a regional product — in a festival of the flavours and traditions of the highlands.

History and traditions

The Serra da Estrela cheese, made from the milk of the mountain sheep, has been made in these highlands for centuries, and the fair grew as its great annual showcase, gathering producers, shepherds and lovers of the cheese in Celorico da Beira. Around it, the region keeps the pastoral traditions that shaped the landscape of the serra.

What to expect

  • The cheeses of the serra, from the producers of the region.
  • Regional products — smoked meats, bread, honey and sweets.
  • The traditions of the sheepherding country around the town.
  • The historic village of Linhares da Beira, a short drive away.

Visiting

The fair is held each year in late winter, around February, in Celorico da Beira, in the Serra da Estrela region. Confirm the dates of each edition with the municipality before your visit.
