Confeitaria Peixinho

The oldest ovos moles house of Aveiro, making the convent sweet since 1856.

The Confeitaria Peixinho in Aveiro

In a pedestrian street of Aveiro’s centre, the Confeitaria Peixinho has been making ovos moles since 1856 — the oldest house of the city’s beloved sweet. The little barrels and the wafers shaped like shells and fish carry a recipe born in the convents of Aveiro, kept by the house for generations.

History and character

Ovos moles were created by the nuns of Aveiro’s convents — above all those of the Convento de Jesus — and passed to the confectioners when the religious houses closed. In 1856 the Peixinho house opened in the town centre, and it has kept the trail of that tradition ever since, making the sweets by the original methods of the recipe it helped to preserve.

What to discover

  • Ovos moles in their wafer shells — fish, shells and little barrels.
  • The other sweets of the house, including the crisp raivas.
  • The shop’s historic interior, in a street of the old centre.
  • The canals and Art Nouveau streets of Aveiro around it.

Visiting

The shop is in the centre of Aveiro, near the main canal, reached on foot from the city’s squares. It works as a pastry shop through the day; check the official page for details before your visit.

Nearby

Ten Museu de Aveiro, in the old Convento de Jesus, and the Mercado do Peixe are both a short walk away.
