Trancoso

A medieval walled town in the Beira Interior, with a castle, old gates and a well-preserved historic centre.

The walled town of Trancoso

Trancoso is one of the most complete medieval towns in the Beira Interior, its walls and gates still enclosing a historic centre of granite houses and narrow streets. Its castle, its churches and its old town make it a rewarding stop between the Serra da Estrela and the Spanish border.

History and identity

The town grew up around its castle in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, on the frontier between the kingdoms, and its walls were strengthened over the following centuries. Trancoso was also the home of the shoemaker-poet Bandarra, whose prophetic verses were famous in the sixteenth century.

What to see and do

  • The walls and gates of the old town.
  • The castle, with its keep and views over the surrounding country.
  • The historic centre, with its granite houses and churches.
  • The Casa do Bandarra and the town’s small museums.

Gastronomy and traditions

Trancoso keeps the traditions of the Beira Interior, with local cheeses, smoked meats and the robust dishes of the region. Its fairs and festivals follow the calendar of the plateau.

Visiting Trancoso

Trancoso is in the district of Guarda, in the Beira Interior, reached by road. Access to the historic centre is free; for the castle and local services, check with the municipality before your visit.
