Trancoso is one of the most complete medieval towns in the Beira Interior, its walls and gates still enclosing a historic centre of granite houses and narrow streets. Its castle, its churches and its old town make it a rewarding stop between the Serra da Estrela and the Spanish border.

    History and identity

The town grew up around its castle in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, on the frontier between the kingdoms, and its walls were strengthened over the following centuries. Trancoso was also the home of the shoemaker-poet Bandarra, whose prophetic verses were famous in the sixteenth century.
