Alentejo to Host Global Wine Tourism Organization Summit in 2026

This prestigious international event will take place as part of the “European Wine Capital 2026” program, a title awarded to Baixo Alentejo in May of this year.

The Alentejo region, known for its rolling landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and award-winning wines, has been selected to host the Global Wine Tourism Organization (GWTO) Global Summit 2026.

Alentejo was chosen over five globally recognized wine tourism destinations — Mendoza (Argentina), Montevideo (Uruguay), Querétaro (Mexico), Biobío (Chile), and Penedès (Spain). The selection was announced during the GWTO Summit 2025, held from July 1 to 5 in Penglai, China. During the summit, Alentejo was also distinguished as a “Responsible Wine Tourism Destination,” in recognition of the region’s sustainability efforts, quality wine experiences, and collaborative approach among wine producers and tourism operators.

A joint bid backed by Regional and National support

The winning bid was presented by a delegation from Alentejo led by Luísa Rebelo, Deputy President of the Alentejo Regional Tourism Promotion Agency, and António Lacerda, Executive Director. Their presentation showcased the region’s strengths in enotourism and its capacity to host a global-scale event.

According to José Santos, President of both the Regional Tourism Entity of Alentejo and Ribatejo and the Regional Tourism Promotion Agency, the application stemmed from a coordinated strategy developed as part of Baixo Alentejo’s campaign for the European Wine Capital title.

“This candidacy reflects the combined efforts of our regional tourism entities and was included in the initial plans for the European Wine City bid,” he stated.

Santos further highlighted that the application had been preceded, in May, by a formal expression of interest to the GWTO.

“Bringing an event of this scale to Alentejo is part of a broader ambition to increase the region’s international visibility and position it as a top destination for wine tourism.”

He also credited the official letter of support from Turismo de Portugal as a significant factor that strengthened the region’s proposal and helped sway the GWTO jury.

Alentejo’s growing role on the Global Wine Stage

Hosting the GWTO Global Summit 2026 marks a milestone for Alentejo, confirming its status as a rising star in international wine tourism. With its blend of authenticity, environmental responsibility, and high-quality wine experiences, the region is well positioned to welcome delegates, experts, and wine lovers from across the globe.

The summit will not only shine a spotlight on Alentejo’s tourism potential but also reinforce Portugal’s growing influence in the global wine tourism sector.
