Blandy’s Wine Lodge

The historic house of Madeira wine in the centre of Funchal, with its lodges and cellars.

Blandy's Wine Lodge in Funchal

In the centre of Funchal, a short walk from the cathedral, Blandy’s Wine Lodge gathers the cellars and the history of Madeira wine. In its long rooms the wines age in casks warmed by the island’s air, and visits pass through the lodges, the old vintages and the story of the family that has been part of the trade since the nineteenth century.

History and character

The house was founded in 1811, when John Blandy settled in Madeira, and the family became one of the great names of the wine that sailed with the ships of the Atlantic — a wine shaped by the warmth of the island in the cellars of Funchal and by the sea voyages that gave it its taste. The lodge keeps that memory, from the warehouses to the oldest vintages.
