Ponta do Pargo

A village on the westernmost point of Madeira, with its lighthouse and ocean sunsets.

The lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo

At the far west of Madeira, where the island ends in high cliffs above the Atlantic, Ponta do Pargo is a village of green fields and quiet roads. Its red lighthouse, the westernmost in Portugal, marks the edge of Europe’s island world and has become a place of pilgrimage for sunset watchers.

History and identity

The village grew from farming and fishing, on an isolated plateau where the land meets the sea. Its lighthouse, built in 1922, still guides ships along the coast, and the surrounding countryside — fields, fruit trees and dramatic cliffs — has kept the slow rhythm of rural Madeira.

What to see and do

  • The lighthouse and the sunset over the Atlantic.
  • The cliffs and viewpoints of the western coast.
  • The village and its quiet countryside.
  • Walking routes along the levadas and footpaths.

Gastronomy and traditions

Ponta do Pargo keeps the rural traditions of Madeira, with poncha, honey cake and the produce of its small farms. Its festivals are part of the island’s village calendar.

Nearby

The natural pools and cliffs of Porto Moniz are a short drive north along the west coast.
