About this experience
During this circular trail through a traditional village and its surroundings, we will discover how life in the countryside on an island in the middle of the Atlantic was, and still is today. 1h15min by van west of Madalena, Calheta de Nesquim is located in the most remote part of the island. It was here that the first whaling station in the Azores was established in 1876.
Fortunately, whaling is banned nowadays. Even so, it represents an important local heritage and has left its mark on this population. It is worth noting that whale hunting was always carried out by hand, with simple and rudimentary equipment and tools.
We will begin our walk at the small fishing port beside the boat houses, where some of the old whaling boats that have been restored are still kept today and, from time to time, are used in sailing or rowing regattas. We will also pass other testimonies of the whaling era, such as a lookout that is now used for whale and dolphin watching.
The trail guides us through streets between natural pools, along old paths, past houses and gardens, through the forest, across pastures and between cellars.
We will return to Madalena along the south coast, with a stop in Lajes do Pico. The largest parish on the south coast is also known as the capital of Whale Culture. Here we finish our tour with a visit to the famous Whalers’ Museum.
