About this experience

The Douro Museum, as a territorial museum, has the mission of representing the natural and cultural heritage of the Douro Demarcated Region, granted World Heritage status by UNESCO as a cultural, evolving and living landscape.

The head office of the Douro Museum is located in the city of Peso da Régua, the result of the rehabilitation of one of the most emblematic buildings in the history of the 18th-century Douro Demarcated Region, the Casa da Companhia, opened on 20 December 2008. Combining tradition and modernity, it stands as a collective space of memory and identity for the wine-growing region, in constant dialogue with the present, and at the same time as an instrument for enhancing the activities associated with winegrowing, cultural tourism and wine tourism.

It comprises a central space – the Exhibition Area – where the permanent exhibition “Douro: Matéria e Espírito” is located.
Around this exhibition space are the «A Companhia» Restaurant, the Shop, the Information Centre (Archive and Library), the Reading Room, the Conservation and Restoration Centre, the Wine Bar and the Garden Terrace overlooking the Douro river. In the adjoining space is another modern-architecture building clad in black slate panels, where the Education Service is located.
The CRIVO – Centre for the Arts of Know-How was recently created, a space for sharing knowledge where the region’s know-how is explored dynamically, covering ancestral and contemporary arts.
