Set off on your full-day tour from Lisbon and discover one of the most scenic parts of the Portuguese countryside. Traverse the Alentejo region with its magnificent plains filled with olive groves, vineyards, and cork oak trees. Your first stop will be Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved medieval cities. Take a guided tour inside the Roman Temple, one of the best-preserved Roman structures on the Iberian Peninsula. Your guide will also show you the must-see Chapel of Bones. Take some time to admire the ornate architecture of Évora Cathedral. Your second stop will be the charming medieval village of Monsaraz, one of Portugal’s oldest villages built within castle walls. Taste one of Portugal’s finest wines with a view over one of Europe’s largest artificial lakes. At the end of a full day of sightseeing, return to Lisbon. Extra Information Évora Évora is the capital of the central-southern region of Portugal, the Alentejo. In the city’s historic center stands the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana). Nearby, white houses surround Évora Cathedral, a massive Gothic structure dating back to the 12th century. The Igreja de São Francisco features both Gothic and Baroque architecture, along with the Capela dos Ossos, decorated with bones. MONSARAZ Monsaraz, the airy medieval town of Monsaraz, retains its ancient magic like few other places in the world. Made of limestone and schist, this place whispers to us, amid the echo of our steps in its streets, magnificent stories of bold kings, Templar knights, brave people, and ladies of simple beauty. ALQUEVA LAKE It is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, built on the Guadiana River. It has a water basin of 250 km2 and covers five municipalities in Alentejo, with many points of interest. On the right bank, you’ll find the castles of Juromenha, Alandroal, Terena, Monsaraz, and Portel, and on the left bank, Mourão and Moura are privileged panoramic points over this body of water.
