Viseu

A city in central Portugal, with a cathedral, a famous museum of Renaissance painting and a well-preserved old town.

The city of Viseu

At the heart of central Portugal, between the mountains and the Dão vineyards, Viseu is a city of granite, gardens and quiet squares. Its cathedral and its old town are among the finest in the region, and its museum of Renaissance painting holds one of the great collections of Portuguese art.

History and identity

Viseu has Roman origins and became an important city in the Middle Ages, seat of a bishopric and of a royal court at times. Its old town, enclosed by the remains of its walls, preserves the atmosphere of a historic city, with churches, palaces and narrow streets.

What to see and do

  • The cathedral and its cloister.
  • The Grão Vasco museum, with its Renaissance paintings.

Gastronomy and traditions

Viseu is the capital of the Dão wine region, and its restaurants serve the robust cooking of the Beira Alta, with local cheeses and smoked meats. Its festivals and markets are part of the calendar of central Portugal.

Nearby

Het Museu Nacional Grão Vasco is in the heart of the old town, and the mountains of the Serra da Estrela are within easy reach to the south-east.
