Mercado Municipal de Évora

Évora’s historic municipal market, back at the heart of city life since its reopening in the 2000s.

The Praça 1.º de Maio in Évora, home of the municipal market

In the Praça 1.º de Maio, in the middle of Évora, the municipal market is one of the city’s everyday landmarks. Its halls carry fish, fruit and vegetables from the Alentejo and its shops and stalls keep the rhythm of the city’s life, a short walk from the Roman temple and the cathedral.

History and identity

The market dates back to the nineteenth century, when the city’s markets were gathered in a new building in the expanding centre. After years of closure, it reopened in 2006 with its interior renewed, regaining its place as the meeting point of the city — a living symbol of Évora’s daily economy.

What to find and discover

  • The fish, fruit and vegetable stalls of the Alentejo.
  • Local cheeses, olive oils, hams and sweets.
  • Flowers and garden produce, in the city’s market tradition.
  • The life of the square around it, with cafés and shops.

Products and specialities

Évora’s market is the natural place to stock up on the flavours of the Alentejo — olive oil, cheese, bread, pork and sweets — in the heart of the UNESCO-listed old city.

Nearby

From the market it is a short walk to the Templo Romano de Évora, the Capela dos Ossos and the Museu Nacional Frei Manuel do Cenáculo.

Visiting

The market is in the Praça 1.º de Maio, in central Évora, reached on foot from the old town. It works daily in the morning hours, with variations on Sundays and holidays; check with the municipality before your visit.
