Ovibeja

The great agricultural fair of southern Portugal, held each spring in Beja.

A visit to the Ovibeja fair

Each spring, the fairground of Beja fills with the Ovibeja, the great agricultural fair of southern Portugal. For several days, the Alentejo gathers at the fair — producers, livestock, regional food and crafts — with concerts and events that make it one of the most important rural festivals of the country.

History and traditions

The Ovibeja was born in the 1980s as the fair of the Alentejo’s agriculture, and grew into the region’s great annual gathering, joining the traditions of the plain with the modern life of its farmers and producers. It remains a fair of the land, celebrating the produce, the work and the culture of the south.

What to expect

  • The pavilions of regional produce — cheeses, wines, olive oils and sweets.
  • Livestock and the traditions of the Alentejo farms.
  • Crafts and the culture of the plain.
  • Concerts and events through the days of the fair.

Visiting

The fair is held each year in spring, in April or May, at the fairground of Beja, in the Alentejo. Confirm the dates and programme of each edition with the organisation before your visit.

Nearby

The city of Beja and the plain of the lower Alentejo surround the fairground, between Évora and the Guadiana.
