About this experience
This walk is a true dive into the history and spirituality of Flores Island.
The route connects old parishes and paths used for centuries by local communities, revealing the deep relationship between faith, the land and tradition.
It begins next to the Igreja do Mosteiro, passing by the Caldeira do Mosteiro and the viewpoints of Portal and moinho da Alagoa – a historic site that to this day keeps a local tradition of milling maize.
Throughout the route, you will take in the views over the ocean and learn about the ancient techniques used with local plants for survival on the island, migratory birds, culture and history.
Along the trail, you will have the opportunity to see Rocha dos Bordões from another angle, the group of ruins, old hamlets, and the famous caldeira do mosteiro.
The trail includes a strategic stop at Miradouro do Portal, where you can enjoy the emblematic landscape of the Cascatas do Ferreiro and the charming Fajãzinha.
Continue to one of the most authentic churches in the village, the Igreja da Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a church dating from the 18th century that features its full-round triumphal arch resting on imposts. Also, the most eagerly awaited gastronomic visit to the famous cheese dairy of Fajãzinha, enjoying the traditional cheeses of Flores Island and learning more about the techniques used by Mrs Ilda.
After the stop at the cheese dairy, continue to visit the Moinho da Alagoa, dating from 1862, named the Moinho de Água da Ribeira da Alagoa.. This mill was renovated a few years ago, but the operating system remains unchanged. Here, maize is still received for milling, and its flour feeds the people and animals of the whole island.
After the visit to Mrs Fátima at the Mill, continue to one of the main points of this walk, the picturesque and historic Aldeia da Cuada, one of the most historic and impressive villages of stone houses still preserved today by a local family.
The tour ends with a delicious picnic specially prepared with local and regional produce.
