The history of wine on Pico island begins in the 15th century, at the time of the first settlement. Since then, an impressive labyrinth of dry-stone walls has been created to make use of the land, housing the vines.

Come with us to discover the testimonies of this wine cycle. We will learn about various elements related to the earlier production.

We will begin our tour in Lajes do Pico, heading towards Madalena along the south coast, with a first stop in São Mateus. We will gain an idea of the extent of the vineyards, whose wine has already been exported to almost the whole world. We will also understand how wine production has changed over time.

Along the coastline we will find many clusters of cellars and see how life has changed over the last 200 years. Today they are places that seem abandoned, but the small cellars are used as weekend homes or even for the production of local table wine. Nowadays, almost all the island’s inhabitants still produce it for their own consumption.

In the protected vineyard area we find tidal wells, stills, wine presses, old warehouses, rola-pipas, relheiras and manor houses.

We continue to the vineyards of Criação Velha, the heart of the UNESCO Heritage site. During a short walk, we will understand the reasons why Pico wine is so different and unique in the world.

At the Cooperativa Vitivinícola we will have the opportunity to taste the wine before returning to Madalena.
