Velas
The main town of São Jorge island in the Azores, between the sea and its green fajãs.

On the south coast of São Jorge, Velas is the island’s main town — a quiet port of white houses and gardens, looking out over the channel towards Pico. Behind it rise the green cliffs of the island, and at their feet lie the fajãs, the flatlands that give São Jorge its character.
역사와 정체성
Velas grew as a port and market town for the island’s cattle and cheese, and its squares and churches still reflect that quiet prosperity. Earthquakes and volcanic seas have shaped its story, and the island’s famous cheese — a protected product — is part of its identity.
